Mountain Rinjani Hike at Lombok, Part Four


The lake is huge and not safe to swim according to our guide, due to coldness, deepness and cleanliness. Porters are cheering up at the lake and fishing for dinner.


I found Gunung Rinjani is often accompany with thick clouds on afternoon.


Thought should be warmer since it surrounded with crater,but it is not. Although less cold compare to camp site at Plawangan Sembalun, but it is still cold because of the wind keep blowing.


Guide and porters make a camp fire to dry our wet clothes after hot spring waterfall and warm us up from shivering. We sat close to the fire and have a great dinner with rice + mixed vegetables.


Porters teach us the express way to warm whole body, by standing close to fire backwards and i have tried, it is very comfortable.


The camp site that enough to fit in hundred of peoples. Orange tent at right is a temporary toilet for pass motion.


The last day of our hike, done some photo shooting around and have a simple breakfast accompany with amazing scene, then we are getting ready to depart to foothill through different trail from where we came from.


We will go around the crater and the Senaru trail cover a “U” shape around Gunung Rinjani as this map.

Senaru trail, a very long trail that require hiker go ascend for near two hours, then only start to descend that take another two more hours.


Part of the trail are sandy, which you can slide down as my team members did in the picture.


The foothill at the end of Senaru trail, toilet and mini store can be found here. The mini stores sells cigarettes, bread, snacks, isotonic drinks and beer.

From end of Senaru trail, you will need to walk another 20 minutes to the gate of Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani that nearby Rinjani Trek Info Center. Our tour agent is waiting for us at this place and sending us to port, for the boat ride to Gili Trawangan island.

Mountain Rinjani Hike at Lombok, Part Three


All hikers need to wake up on midnight to get prepare as Gunung Kinabalu hike. we woke up on 02:30, porters already prepared us light breakfast with sandwich and tea.


On the peak of Gunung Rinjani, extremely cold after some rest but it gets warmer after sun rise.


Unlike Gunung Kinabalu that is over crowded, there are less people hike Gunung Rinjani, probably due to lesser marketing done by local government.


Breath taking view that IMO it surpass Kota Kinabalu’s 4095m view although Rinjani is shorter in height.


Crater and the lake (Danau Segara Anak), very interesting that there is a active baby volcano within the lake of volcano.

While waiting for my team mates, took a group photo with another team that come from Malaysia too.


The love and hate of the sandy rock i talk about in most of Rinjani post, descent of 10 minutes will equal to 30 minutes of ascent. Ascending is no fun and tiring but sliding down is very exciting which sort of like skating.

Reached camp site on noon, took another great lunch with rice, fried garlic egg and very nice maggie mee that warms body up after the cold hike.


After the lunch, is time to trek down towards volcano lake. Along the way, you will see another side of the mountain full filled with beautiful flower above, the Edelweiss Flower.


After another two hours trekking, arrived on the fairy-tale like scene at the volcano lake.

Mountain Rinjani Hike at Lombok, Part Two


Our guide arranged a truck for us that save another 20 minutes walking distance from Lembah Rinjani Homestay to starting point.

Backside of Mountain Rinjani, 1/5 of mountain on top are sandy rock, one or two trekking poles will definitely help on stabling steps from sliding backward and use hand strength to ease on tired legs while ascent. On descending, trekking poles will help on balancing and act as breaking while you “sliding down“. Yes, sliding down will be more wiser choice as it will consume less time and less burden on knee, but you will need to clear your shoes once a while as those rocks will slip-in.


Our porters preparing on carrying those heavy stuffs (mostly foods and tents) on their shoulder. I have tried on carrying, it is heavy! Easily hit 20 kg especially with those mineral waters.


Because of dry season on volcano area, dying trees and grass easily burn up during day time, a mask is necessary else will result hard breath or sore throat.


Terrain that hardly seen at our country, Malaysia which normally surrounded by large amount of tall trees. Easily get nice photo shoot result with wide angle lens, worth carry extra load of my Pentax DSLR.


Lunch time, porters are delegated with tasks such as preparing us a flatter ground to sit and lay down to rest, preparing meals by cooking with traditional wood fire way without gas stove.


Our meal, fresh pineapple and biscuits as appetisers, main course with rice and soto ayam alike soup with mixed vegetables. Porters will only have their meals after serving us, truly thanks to them for all the hard work.


Plawangan Sembalun, the camp site on mountain ridge. Do mind it is very cold after sun down, and it gets colder at night.


Me and my team mate found water point by following porters, where you can wash your face and clean body. It is about 10 minutes away from camp site, there is also a abandoned toilet over there which can’t be use.


Peak of Mountain Rinjani, it is way up high and far away. Hikers will need to walk through long mountain ridge, then only hike up sandy rock trail to the peak, it will take another 4 hours trekking from camp site.

Beautiful scene accompany with great Dinner, fried rice with vege, tomato, cucumber with fried egg and prawn cracker on top.


Starry night which you can look with naked eye, try to spot meteor while at camp site or during hike to peak. I am lucky to witness a slide of meteor while resting on a rock during peak trail.

Mountain Rinjani Hike at Lombok, Part One

Went to Mountain Rinjani (3726m) at North Lombok, an active volcano in Lombok island of Indonesia. Hereby, i will share some infomration and photos gathered from the journey.


The whole trip cost around RM 1,400 include evertying from hiking package, guesthouse at Gili Trawangan, hotel at Sengigi, airfare of RM 400+ and pocket money. FYI, Lombok island is not far away from Bali island with boatride of 1 hour to 2 hours depends on destination.

Our itinerary as below,

Day 1: Airport – Sembalun Lawang (Homestay at foot of the mountain rinjani)
Day 2: Sembalun Lawang – Plawangan Sembalun, camp site at 2,639m
Start to hike 07:00 to 2,639m (Plawangan Sembalun), lunch on halfway, reach campsite about 15:00, settle down, eat dinner and overnight camp.
Day 3: Plawangan Sembalun – Peak – Danau Segara Anak
Ascend to summit 3,726m on 2:30 after breakfast, reach peak on 06:00. Descent to camp site to have lunch and continue to the Lake (Danau Segara Anak) to camp for another night. Evening bath at hot spring waterfall and this is the only bath during hike.
Day 4: Danau Segara Aank – Plawangan Senaru – Desa Senaru – Gili Trawangan
From Danau Segara Anak descent through Senaru trail after breakfast, the trail trek around crater of volcano and takes 5 hours. Reach foothill on 15:30 and depart to Gili Trawangan island, a famous travel spot that you can spot big numbers of western.
Day 5: Gili Trawangan – Senggigi
Senggigi beach hotel which is more relaxing and visit town nearby.
Day 6: Senggigi – Aiport back to KL

– a night at Lembah RInjani Homestay with breakfast
– guide and local porter, tent for sleep and toilet tent
– mattress and sleeping bag

– 2 x transport (airport to Sembalun, Senaru to Senggigi Port)
– permit and entrance fee to Rinjani area


Entrance gate to Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, get prepare of camera as there will be numbers of nice views and interesting shooting moment that i missed out.

Things to bring along by self:

– camera and money
– lip balm, sun lotion (i got serious sun burn)
– cap, sunglasses, mask to cover nose mouth from sand and dust
– torch light and head lamp
– personal medicine
– sweater / jacket / windbreaker
– tissue, towel, t-shirt, pants, gloves
– goggles, swimsuit (for hot spring)

Scenery is amazing along the way and i have yet to see similar scenes in Malaysia. variant colours from clear blue sky, shorter height of trees and great mountain view (with obvious shape and lines) creates a good environment for photo shoot.


The place we stay nearby foot of mountain, Lembah Rinjani Homestay & Restaurant at Sembalun Lawang, around 30 minutes from starting point. We went on September 2013 which is dry season, no rain, scorching sun but very cooling (around 10˚ – 15˚ degree depend on time). If you are going on same period of time, be sure water heater is working at the place you stay.


Village nearby our home-stay, quite and peaceful place, basically is just us visit the place on that timing, therefore drawed attention from local children and teenagers.


Introduced by our leader, the Tolak Angin, a traditional Indonesia liquid product that made from honey and ginger. It taste a little sweet and spicy, texture alike power gel which can be chew a little in mouth. It is a very useful product during our 3 days hiking period, helps on uncomfortable of stomach (进风), dizziness due to high altitude and running nose due to coolness.


Our great porters which can hike the mountain with slippers, thin clothes with sarong instead of jacket, able to run while carry heavy stuff on their shoulder. The followed us along the hiking path (not for the peak), carry mineral water, prepare all the meal for 3 days, building up tents and temporary toilet (pee and poo).


The great team of mine, thankful to be able to hike with them again. All things prepared, we are excited and heading to starting point.
