  • Suunto Ambit: a nice watch for outdoor activites

Purchased Suunto Ambit from Davis for RM 1999. Basically a all-in-one functions watch, but IMHO, Suunto need to work on Ambit firmware (verion 1.5) and Movescount. There are few things missing out such as interval training, time based alarm while in exercise mode and standalone synchronize software (internet needed for exercise mode setting). If you needed those features urgently, Garmin 910xt will be a better choice.

Overall, it provides most of the basic features and works perfectly like it should for any sports. Been using Ambit for a month, here is somethings that i like:

  • “3 info display” of exercise mode allow user to customize on which data to show
  • lesser buttons design, simple user interface to control
  • more watch-like design instead of wrist computer
  • nice backlit screen that make easier to read, even from a distance
  • although is a big watch, but feels comfortable wearing it
  • fast lock on Heart pod and GPS
  • no space for dust or sand to stick in, so it hardly get dirty
  • The Suunto Ambit is good to go for swimming, but heart rate pod will not work well. In the water, the data can’t be transmit when the watch is not placed next to heart rate pod. However, the pod is waterproof, whcih will make easier for triathlon.

    Focusrite Scarlett 8i6

Previously used a PCI card: ESI Juli@ as audio interface, but a portable USB audio needed for my laptop since formatted desktop to Ubuntu. After done some research, found out Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 having positive review and recommendation from forum.

Got it for RM 1000 from Francis (Burgercis Music) at Berjaya Times Square, locate few shops away from SMX. Some info about Burgercis Music:

    Address:

If you are getting a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 too, remember to download updated firmware: Focusrite USB 2 Driver-2.3.exe and Scarlett MixControl-1.1.exe. The more detailed user guide are available from here: Scarlett 8i6 – User Guide.pdf

I have using it for a week now, the unit perform as it should be without any problems. No latency noticed, control knob provide instant feedback, helpful Hi-Z line in (eliminate direct box), no “Pop” sound when turning it on (with monitor volume always at 3/4), useful Scarlet Plug-in and nice simple Mix Control interface. IMHO, this is currently the best you can get within the RM 1000 price range.

Below is my music demo by using Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 as audio interface. With Semi-acoustic and Bass guitar direct line-in Focusrite Scarlett 8i6. Electric guitar through Blackstar HT-1R‘s emulated output into Focusrite Scarlett 8i6.

    Nathan Endurance Race Vest

Purchased a Nathan Endurance vest from Key Power Sports for long distance training purpose, cost RM 279.00.

Makes me headache at first, because of bouncing issue. After getting advise from Sherpa John, spent times playing with those straps and it got better. However, it will still bounce vertically at the back if the vest fill up from 1 litre onwards to the Max 2 litre. To minimize vertical bounce, i filled less than 1 litre and it started to feel right while running. (In addition, there will be noisy water splashing sound at back that you will need to get used to it.)

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 (Anniversary Limited Edition) Review

Been searching for a road running shoes recently since getting more into road run. It was okay for Salomon XR Crossmax to do heel strike (lots of cushion on heel). But after i changed to forefoot run, it felt a little stiff, maybe due to its design purpose for trail run.

After some research on current running shoes, it came down to Newton MV2, Saucony Knivara 2 and Mizuno Wave Rider 15. Tested 3 shoes, IMO:

Newton MV2: very light and comfortable but extra cushion on forefoot felt weird to wear compare to Salomon XT Hawk and XR Crossmx. I want to be able to switch shoes without too much of noticing and adjustment while running, so did not choose this.

Saucony Kinvara 2: Light but not much of cushion and durability seems to be the least in here. Probably after i build up my speed and strength for forefoot run, i’ll get this one.

Mizuno Wave Rider 15: Heavier (10.6 oz) but it felt most comfortable, smooth on forefoot run and also seems the most durable compare to shoes above, so i bought the Limited 15th Anniversary edition in Ruby/Crystal colors.

Is been one week wearing it with current usage around 35 kilometres, and these is what i found:

  • On 20KM easy run, the extra cushion on forefoot does help when reaching 15KM+ that usually makes ball foot hurts.
  • Running 6KM fast on flat road with Mizuno Waver Rider feels effortless
  • Mizuno Wave Rider 15 is not a rock magnet like Salomon XR Crossmax, which is good
  • Both of my Salomon shoes feels attached to the leg and Wave rider feels like a big cushion under your feet
  • Mizuno Wave Rider 15 is awful when i try it on trail, espcially running on big rocks area, mass of wet leaves and extreme uneven trail.
  • Overall, i am very happy with Mizuno Wave Rider 15, good price, sharp looking and a perfect road running shoes.
