Mount Kinabalu: Hiking Preparation and Check List

Notes before Day 1 hike:

  • store luggage in KK Park office, RM10
  • walking stick available for rent at KK park office, RM12
  • porter fees RM8 per kg, porter might be faster or slower than your pace, so you might not get instant access to food or water
  • weather is unpredictable because of altitude, temperature may drastic drop or increase
  • package of simple lunch will be provide, remember to leave some space on back pack for it
  • stop few minutes at each rest station, take breath to let your body get used to the altitude
  • water point will be enough near rest station, bring a water bottle along and refill
    (*price may vary due to inflation)
  • Day 1: Ascend from KK Park to Laban Rata

    i) Back Pack

    – water Bag or water bottle
    – pen
    – head light
    – Rain Poncho
    – winter jacket
    – winter gloves
    – rubber gloves
    – gardening gloves for walk the torq / low’s peak circuit
    – towel
    – camera
    – charger: phone, camera
    – panadol
    – plastics
    – Foods: 100+, glucose, bread, power gel, seeds, nuts, chocolates (smaller pieces the better)
    – set of outfit: for sleep + day 2 summit conquer + descend
    – 1 x extra shirt and pants in case get wet while going back to hut after dinner
    – toiletries : tooth brush, tooth paste, listerine, shampoo, tissue, lip balm

    ii) Outfit

    – walking stick
    – towel (small size to clear sweat)
    – winter hat (colder on altitude >2800m)
    – jacket (colder on altitude >2800m)
    – dry fit shirts
    – dry fit long pants
    – watch
    – ankle or knee support
    – shoes and socks

    Notes after reached Laban Rata

  • once reach your hut in laban rata, choose a bed -> rest and take deep breaths for 15 minutes -> take bath
  • panadol, take it when you feel dizzy before get into serious headache or altitude sick
  • early arriver go to laban rata canteen to get nice seats for rest of of the team
  • food, water and included buffet dinner (17:30) will be available at laban rata canteen
  • resort / hut will provide water for you to refill
  • prepare pancho, winter jacket, headlight to laban rata for dinner, raining percentage >80%

  • Notes before Day 2 hike:

  • plan amount water you need for 7- 8 hours as there are no water point.
  • for low’s peak circuit, there will one water point on 2/3 of route
  • take chocolate pieces before you feel hungry, in exchange of energy for heat to keep body warm in the low temperature
  • Day 2: Ascend from Laban Rata to Summit

    i) Back Pack
    – water Bag or water bottle
    – 100+
    – Rain Poncho
    – gardening gloves for walk the torq / low’s peak
    – foods: power gel, glucose, seeds, nuts, chocolates (smaller pieces the better)

    ii) Outfit
    – head light
    – rubber gloves as inner layer (it helps to keep warm)
    – winter gloves
    – winter jacket
    – dry fit shirts
    – dry fit long pants
    – camera
    – watch
    – shoes and socks

    Notes on descend:

  • double check is there any leftover at hut, especially dirty socks and shirts from day 1
  • take any bus that allow you to get back to KK Park office
  • collect certificate (RM20) before KK Park office closed on 17:00, then clean up at wash-room beside
  • early arriver can help to collect team member’s certificates
  • for walk the torq and low’s peak circuit team, you can buy “Mountain Torq T-shirt” (RM25) at mountain torq office before 5pm
  • there is a included lunch at KK park restaurant from 12:00 – 16:30, if you missed the time and hungry, head to restaurant opposite KK park for meal, cheaper with nice scene

  • Tips:

  • good choice of shoes will give a better grip to prevent from slips, brand recommend: kampung adidas, Salomon, timberland
  • wear dry fit shirts, pants for the whole hike helps compares to cotton’s, as rain percentage is high
  • better to reach laban rata before 4pm as water pressure will get smaller and water heater might not be not working well due to number of ppls and temperature drops
