Samsung Galaxy S3 MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)

UMS (USB Mass Storage Mode) is not available on Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note (latest firmware). User have to use MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) to transfer file. According to reddit comments titled “Whoa, whoa. ICS doesn’t support USB mass storage?“, differences between UMS and MTP:

  • Not all the operating systems are compatible with the MTP
  • MTP mode allow user to access files on phone storage while connected to PC

  •   (Previous firmware)

      (Current firmware)

    Transfer files using MTP Mode

This mode only works on my most recent Windows 7 laptop, it does not work on my Ubuntu PC and Windows XP Pc. After refer to “Ice Cream Sandwich explained: MTP – what is it, why use it, and how to set it up“,

  • For MAC users, install third party software: Android File Transfer
  • For Windows XP users, install Device(Install),USB Driver (Software) (ver.v1.4.6.0)
  • For Ubuntu users, refer “[How to] Connect your Android Ice Cream Sandwich Phone to Ubuntu for File Access“.
  • In addtion, i’ve tested on PC with Windows Media Player 9, but it only allows to limited file-type to transfer through Windows Media Player. After updated to Windows Media Player 11, it allows to transfer any file-type with Windows Explorer as image below:

The reason for this are explained in article “MTP Function Driver“, “Media Transfer Protocol (commonly referred to as MTP) is part of the “Windows Media” framework and thus closely related to Windows Media Player. Support for Media Transfer Protocol in Windows XP requires the installation of Windows Media Player 10 or Windows Media Player 11.”

FBI Shuts Down Three Pirated Android App Sites

The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) seized 3 domains for alleged android application piracy, web domains includes applanet.net, appbucket.net, and snappzmarket.com.

“The seizures are the result of a comprehensive enforcement action taken to prevent the infringement of copyrighted mobile device apps. The operation was coordinated with international law enforcement, including Dutch and French law enforcement officials.” (Justice News, August 21, 2012)

By visiting these 3 websites, it will display a banner titled “FBI anti-piracy warning” from FBI, Department of Justice and National Intellectual Property Rights Center.

This is the first case of website domains involving cell phone app marketplaces are seized according to Press Release from Department of Justice.

“The theft of intellectual property, particularly within the cyber arena, is a growing problem and one that cannot be ignored by the U.S government’s law enforcement community. These thefts cost companies millions of dollars and can even inhibit the development and implementation of new ideas and applications. The FBI, in working with its various corporate and government partners, is not only committed to combating such thefts but is well poised to coordinate with the many jurisdictions that are impacted by such activities,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Lamkin.
