Xperia Arc: Flash CyanogenMod 9

Been a year with Xperia Arc, is time to unlock booatloader and install CyanogenMod custom rom, the latest CyanogenMod 9 (based on Android 4.x Ice Cream Sandwich).

Thanks to Free Xperia Team from XDA Developers forum that putting hardwork and keep rolling out updates to make sure CyanogenMod works good on Xperia handset. Below are brief explanation on steps to install CyanogenMod 9 on Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc (LT15i).

Tools and Backup:

  • Need a PC and USB Cable to unlock, flash, file transfer
  • Do Back-Up, flashing progress will wipe all your data
  • CM 9.0 is still in progress, some function are not working yet, refer HERE
  • Treat this post as an extra, your main master guide will be: “Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc: Full Update Guide”
  • Preparation and Steps:

      i) Speed reading through these sites:

ii) Downloads (These are whatever i downloaded to make it done)

iii) Sequences in brief (Detail steps refer to the links attached)

  • Install Android SDK by following this site: Howto: Install the Android SDK
  • Get the Fastboot: Fastboot
  • Unlock Bootloader: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc: Full Update Guide
  • Flash the phone: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc: Full Update Guide
  • For application downloads: Freeware Lovers: alternative Android apps download Site
  • Minor Problems:

Have met few small problems during progress, i just Google-ed out solutions and replaced some file that can be found (which included on “Downloads” section above). Problems such as:

  • During SDK installation, i left out Google USB Driver install, therefore met problems in next stages.

  • Since i have trouble on SDK, i refer to this site too: What Is ADB And How To Install It With Android SDK

  • Replaced C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google driver with usb_driver

  • when click on menu button to connect via pc, it asked to instal Android adb Interface
adb Driver for xperia Arc. i downloaded this and direct windows to the folder and install

  • Fastboot not working in my terminal (cmd mode), downloaded fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar and copy all (fastboot.exe, AdbWinApi.dll and AdbWinUsbApi.dll) in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

  • img boot, need to type full HDD address in terminal. In my case, my boot.img is in D:\Xperia Arc Flash\CM 9, so i typed this in terminal: fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot D:\Xperia Arc Flash\CM 9\boot.img

  • Boot device into bootloader: in arc, Press & hold the Menu button while connecting the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc to the computer, it will display Blue color on LED Notification light

  • ClockworkMod Recovery: typed “fastboot -i 0xfce reboot“, i pressed side Volume Rocker after the “Free Xperia Project” screen, so it doesn’t boot in ClockworkMod Recovery. Should pressed side Volume Rocker before or during the “Free Xperia Project” screen

Sygic: Android GPS Navigation for Malaysia

I have tried Papago X5, HTC Locations that pre-loaded in HTC devices and Navit. Current the top in my list is Sygic, it features everything that GPS nagivation should have (GPS coordinates input that Papago X5 miss out, POI symbols that HTC locations don’t have and smooth beautiful 3D graphics that Navit lacked of).

    Sygic GPS Navigation

    Play Store: Sygic: GPS Navigation
Official Site: Sygic GPS Navigation for Android
Price for Malaysia and Singapore Maps: USD 42.99

You can try it by download from Google Play Store, but trial version will only last for 7 Days, to get unlimited license, you’ll need to purchase license from www.sygic.com. I have installed it on HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy Note, it works perfectly.

Also note that the application doesn’t need Data connection to navigate, Sygic only require GPS to work.

    Steps to Install:

    i) Download Sygic from Google Play Store
ii) It will ask permission to install after download complete, just install it.
Launch the app name “Sygic” in your application drawer after Installation complete
iii) Skip the Email sign-in part
iv) It will generate a list of maps, Choose “Asia” -> “Malaysia”
    v) Let it download 510 MB file
vi) After download completed, activate “GPS”, re-launch the app and Navigation is ready

S Voice: Full working .apk for non-Galaxy SIII handset

Finally, a full working S Voice .apk is back again, it works for android phones other than Samsung Galaxy S III. There was a leak earlier but it is not working because of sign-in issue. Thanks to XDA member ithehappy, check the original XDA thread here.

Difference with the previous leaked, the latest signing the application by fooling that your phone is a Galaxy S3, so non-Galaxy S3 users able to use the S Voice voice-command application again. Installed the S Voice .apk (28.69MB) in my HTC One X, it works good, tested on weather, messaging, setting alarm clock and application launch without problem.
