GO Launcher EX

There are some alternative launchers from android markets. Go launcher EX is one of the best, simple yet nice. Most importantly, is free.

GO Launcher EX

Official Site: http://www.goforandroid.com/GDTEn/soft.aspx?softid=13
Official Blog: http://golauncher.goforandroid.com/

Have been using it for few months. It performs better compare to Stock Sony launcher, with 2.3.4 firmware, it is pretty fast.

Go launcher ex on 2.3.4

Here are benefits by using it,
  - customize preferred animation on switching pages or launching apps menu
  - numbers of free themes in market available to choose
  - frequent updates on bugs fixing, speed improvements and latest firmware support
  - bundled “Clear History” and “Close All Programs” functions in app drawer

Theme used on images above ia Blue Theme GO Launcher EX, by Lucky Art

After installed new launcher, prompt box on selection of stock browser and Go launcher will appear. It will prompt up whenever you pressed on Home button, tick “Use by default for this action” if want to keep using that launcher. You can always clear default on Setting -> Manage Application -> Go launcher Ex -> tap on “Clear default”.

Another easier way for switching different launcher, is by installing:
Home Manager
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.carp.HomeManager&feature=related_apps

One thing is Home manager will show notifications on status bar by default, however you can clear it by going into Home Manager’s setting, untick on “Notification” and “Quick Switcher”.

Google Music 3.0 for Android (Outside USA)

Google Music is only available in USA, for anyone outside, either install it by using market enabler or search .apk online to install. Somehow, i can’t get it download by faking mobile service with market enabler. So i download .apk from xda-developers,

Google Music 3.0 .apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072655

Download the .apk on site above, by browse site through phone or download into PC then copy in to your phone, both works. I tested on Sony Ericcson Arc firmware 2.3.4 and it runs perfect. If you are not Google Music user, you can use it as a normal music player.

The Music interface looks pretty fine and it works smoothly. At bottom of interface, it shows song that is playing and able to be pause or move to next track. Interface’s background change colors randomly from time to time.

On track playing interface, background will change according to your album cover. Background will become a blurred version of album cover.

October 4th “Let’s talk iPhone”

This is it, the long awaited Apple iPhone event. It will be hold at Cupertino, California headquarters on October 4th, 2011. Not the usual San Francisco location. The event starts at 10 a.m. PDT, 01:00 Malaysia time.

Source: Apple

Look at invitation picture apple sent out above. My interpret from the image are:
  i) Title of Event: Let’s talk iPhone
ii) 1st icon: Calendar shows event date, October 4th
iii) 2nd icon: Clock shows event held on 10:00
iv) 3rd icon: California Apple Corporate Headquarters on map
vi) 4th icon: Only 1 iPhone will be introduce instead of two

Now, this will be the first product unveiling for Apple since Steve Jobs resigned. He is always a star and a great story teller at launch event before this. Will he be on stage for the last time? or new CEO Tim Cook will take place on product introduction.

Whether or not there will be an iPhone 4s, most of us will keep our eyes on the fifth-generation iPhone. Here are some realistically expect from iPhone 5:
  - Larger Screen
  - A5 dual-core processor
  - 1GB RAM
  - 8 MP and record full 1080p HD video
  - Similar design as iPhone 4
  - Voice-controlled “Assistant”
  - Support CDMA & GSM networks

Taman Lembah Kiara

Taman Lembah Kiara is a family-oriented park located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. Skate boarder, roller-skater, Bikers, family and joggers often can be seen here.

This is a one of the best place for jogging in klang valley. Entrance is free, park is clean, enough parking spaces, and cemented platform, benches and bars for warming up.

The running paths are well-paved. Along the way, there are trees, suspension bridges, shallow streams, large pond and nice scene on higher spot.

The route separated into two paths, one that is harder with more uphill and the another for more leisure around the large pond, both are connected at different points. The whole routes is a big circle, so doesn’t need to worry it will lead you to the other end of park.

The smaller loop is about 1.15km and bigger loop is near to 2km. For 10km training, i run a mix of 8 small + 1 big loops.

Lots of monkeys along the routes, so you might need to be careful on your belongings.

Please note that this place will be crowded on evenings and weekend mornings. If it is fully parked, you can always park along the road outside, there are plenty of spaces around.

Xperia Arc 2.3.4 Firmware update (Rooted with locked bootloader)

Sony Ericsson rolled out 2.3.4 earlier than what they’ve planned, update is available through PC companion or SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) since few days ago.

I waited for OTA(Over The Air) since OTA is the best way to update and remain rooted with locked bootloader. Please remember update by using PC companion or SEUS will wipe out your Root Access. OTA is the only way to remain your root access with locked bootloader since firmware 2.3.2.

On 23/September, OTA is available in Malaysia.
My arc’s firmware update details,

Previous Firmware: 2.3.3 rooted
Update path : OTA through 3G
File Size : 94MB
Duration : Around 20 minutes.

Now, it updated to 2.3.4 with root, data and apps remained.

Update highlights:
- Faster Boot time
- Swipe text input
- Calendar update
- Camera/ Video zoom in and zoom out (volume button)
- 3D Sweep Panorama and Sweep Panorama
- 3D gallery app
- Screenshots (hold power button)
- New widget: World Clock, Traffic, Weather
- Themes selection interface change
- Application manager transparency look
- Thumbnails in Home folder
- Updated Facebook inside Xperia
- Sony Ericsson LiveDock multimedia station
- Animation on launching Screenlock, Setting and Homescreen exchange
- Smoother action on browsing contacts, sms and application manager

**Note: If you are already on 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 without root, then you will need to:
i) Flash back to .181 firmware/2.3.2
ii) Gingerbreak it for Root access
iii) Update to 2.3.4 OTA

Follow this thread for detail information:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274572

Refer this on how to Flash back .181/2.3.2 firmware and Gingerbreak:
http://kampungtoys.com/2011/06/18/how-to-root-xperia-arc-2-3-3-with-locked-bootloader/

FAQ:
i) Why need to Flash back .181/2.3.2 firmware?
-Because Gingerbreak only work on it. No recent update that works on 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 firmware.

ii) Why have to update through OTA to remain root?
-By Comparing file size downloaded between SEUS/PC Companion and OTA. OTA is smaller with 94MB. So, my guessing is that SEUS/PC Companion re-install whole of the firmware, where OTA only update some system files which din’t wipe out rooted part.

*Update on 03/12/2011
New easier way to Root with Locked Bootloader, refer this post::
“Root with Lock Bootloader: Easy Rooting Toolkit [v3.0]“
